Philosophy of Hayao Miyazaki Comic Page 4 by sapphiresky1410 Philosophy of Hayao Miyazaki Comic Page 4 by sapphiresky1410
For my visual narratives class we had to make a five page comic that told the story/a story of a famous person's life. I chose to do Hayao Miyazaki, and instead of doing a direct sroty about him, I chose to do a telling oh his philosophy about life- beliefs that he has gathered through his life and now incorporates into his movies.

The whole comic was done using ink- no pens, just nibs and brush, and all shaded was done with ink washes.

I had never used ink (besides micron pens) until now, so it was a bit daunting, but it turned out to be pretty fun!

I've always loved Miyazaki's leading ladies!  Especially Nausicaa.

And I think the closest a guy has ever come to having to save the girl in a Miyazaki film was just getting her out of a rut and giving some words of encouragement.

I have one question about Princess Mononoke. If it's about her, then why is the story revolving around Ashitaka? I love the movie, Im just wondering.

Where is this quote from? Like what book, interview, etc.? I haven't found a source and I'd love to see the whole thing that this was from.

Not a bad philosophy in my opinion. As it should be. Equality.

That's one of the reasons he won me over a long time ago. He is a true humanist.
It feels good to see female characters be treated as equals and not tools for the hero to look good.
The World needs more "equalist" philosophers like this.

My admiration and my whole love for this AMAZING MAN! cause it like this, gender doesn't make you more or less suited to be a hero. Everything is about will and your own strenght! wether if you are a man or a woman.

Heck yeah! That's what I love about Miyazaki: not only does he make awesome movies, but he always has a strong female character and they're usually the main character!
Excellent work, btw ^__^

Wow! Awesome project (coming from a College Instructor + Miyazaki fan). Do you mind me asking what college/program you're in. Visual Narratives sounds like a great offering.

Thank you! I am at the University of Michigan's school of Art and Design- There aren't many "programs" within it, sadly (we are getting a new dean, because many people are unhappy with this lack of focus) but I am putting my focus into illustration and 3D digital animation and modeling. And yes, I have absolutely loved my Visual Narratives class! Our next assignmet is to attend this Mini Comics Day - in which we will stay in the bulding for a full 16 hours and are challenged to complete a mini comic during that time (so excited), and our final project is going to be on making a 5 page (at least) comic about a story from our own lives. It's a fantastic class!

Did you use actual quotes that he said during the interview? :)

They were all translations, so I tweaked some of the word choice, but that last text box on this page is only a slight adaption of his literal words during the interview. =)

Nice. The drawings are quite nice, everything looks anatomically correct, and your ink technique is good.

Wish I had an inking class. XP

Thank you! Yeah, I actually had no idea that we would be using traditional inking techniques at all in this class- at first I was kind of afraid of it because it's a lot less control than a pen, and while I'm still not used to it, I ended up liking it quite a bit!

Sweet. Wish I had classes like that. I could certainly use some classes to improve my inking skills.
